Scott Pope
Artist's Statement
As a native of western
North Carolina, I was exposed to a strong tradition of crafts at an early age.
From a family imbedded in the furniture industry, I began making and building
things on my own as a child. I went on to study art at East Carolina University
and it was there that I discovered metalsmithing.
Inspiration comes from my love of art, my fascination with machinery and the
natural world that surrounds us. My love of nature fuels my passion for the
intricacies and beauty of the stones and woods that are used in my work. My love
of art and fascination with the mechanics of how things work drive the need for
exploration. Combining the beauty and designs found in the faces of stones and
the grains of wood, and the endless possibilities in the way metal is formed and
connected, enables me to achieve a harmony between the mechanical and the
natural worlds. The use of clean lines, hot and cold connections and understated
shapes brings a unique since of design, unity and balance to my work. Each piece
is hand-formed and fabricated from raw materials and handcrafted with precision.
Through the use of multiple finishes I am able to add depth and character, and
highlight the details in each piece.
As I explore and grow in my craft, my hope is that these objects reflect the
personality of the wearer as well as reflecting the artist that created them,
bringing an appreciation of art into the lives of others, now and in times to
come.
