Wax Carving (Multi-Week Course)

Date: 09/22/2006

Students will cast their projects during class but may do finish work on their own.
Projects will be designed in collaboration with the instructor while employing new techniques.

• 2 to 3 Wax carvers #1* - #121110  (these will be made into different wax carving tools)

• 1 Wax Carver #5 - #121115*

• 1 Wax file, 7” - #131385*

• 1 Alcohol Lamp (glass) - #114287*

• 1 Small container denatured alcohol - #133922*

• 1 Needle Wax file set of 6 - #133922 (optional)

• 3 sticks yellow sticky wax - #121515

• Small package 8 gauge sprue wax

• 1 Perfect Purple wax

• 1 Ring tube sizer

• 1 Ring tube, blue - #40-14289

• 1 File-a-wax assortment – Junior - #05520

• 1 Brass scratch brush - #116305

• 1 Degree Gauge

• 1 Aluminum Step Mandrel - #1210890 (recommended)

• 1 Economy file size #1 or #0

• 1 #2 barrette needle file (#131462)

• 1 Soft toothbrush (maybe an old one)

• 1 Jeweler’s saw frame

• 1 Package of wax saw blades

• 1 Package of #1 saw blades

• 1 Inverted Cone Bur (approximately 2.5 mm)

• 2 Paddle Burs (1-size small and 1-size medium)

• 2 Ball Burs  (1 size approximately 2 mm & 1 size approximately 3.5 mm)

• 1 Wax Bur Set (optional)

• 1 cigarette lighter

• X-Acto Knife

• Particle mask

• Safety glasses

• 1 pair of rubber gloves

• 1 Glue Stick

• Tracing paper

•  Graph Paper – size 10 squares per inch

•  1 Ultra fine line sharpie pen

•  1 ring or small pendent size cabochon – preferably a (3- 5 mm) round or 5X7mm oval – other gemstone possibilities will be discussed

• Metal for casting – usually 1-3 troy oz. of silver casting grain.  The exact amount will be determined upon completion of student’s waxes.

• Studio fee - $15.00 to cover assorted casting supplies

 Additional metal finishing supplies will be discussed in class and will be necessary at a later date.
