Fold and Score Forming Workshop
Date: 11 Jun 2005
In addition to this workshop's registration cost, there will be a modest
materials fee. Please contact the school for details, as the fee is dependent on current market values.
Fold Forming Supplies
- Saw frame and half dozen 2/0 blades.*
- Straight hand shears of good quality. Curved shears are optional, but allow more flexibility in cutting some of the shapes. Shears should be able to handle 20 gauge sheet of non-ferrous metal.*
- Sterling silver sheet in 20 gauge-24 gauge. No more than 2 gauges are necessary. Shears will be available for larger sheets to be cut down. A total of 12 square inches of silver will be adequate, and 24 square inches will be generous (2" x 6" or 4" x 6", respectively, in any combination of gauges).
- An old metal spoon or bezel burnisher.
- Several pair of chain nose pliers or needle-nose pliers. Tape needle-nose pliers so they won’t mar your metal.
- An old butter knife with a stiff non-serrated blade, so it can be used for a pry bar. If the blade happens to be broken off so it is only 2-3” long, so much the better! Round off any sharp edges so you don’t accidentally cut yourself using it as a pry bar. Or you can use a watchmakers blade if you have one available.
- Your favorite chasing and/or forging hammers, favorite chasing or dapping punches, favorite mallet and a large bench block. There will be general class supplies available, but with your own supplies you will be able to work faster.
- Sharpie or similar brand of permanent black marker, regular or chisel nib.
- Several absorbent aprons, or tea towels that can be tucked at the waistband. You will be wiping moisture off your metal frequently. Your metal must be dry before putting it through a rolling mill, and several allows you to change out when one becomes too wet to use effectively.
- Safety glasses or goggles.
- Good quality, comfortable earplugs. With a large class all hammering, the noise is incredible—protect your hearing!
- If you wear orthotic braces or splints, bring them. Even those that normally don’t wear orthotics may consider buying a simple wrist brace to prevent soreness. This class is very intensive on forging.
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. This is a physically demanding workshop. You will be on your feet a lot, and you will work up a sweat.
- Your favorite headache remedy.
*Only one set of these items listed are necessary if you are taking the score folding class in conjunction with this class.
Note: Students will have a generous supply of practice material, but within a short period of time you will understand the principles and be able to apply the information to precious materials, which you will be able to sell with the addition of a few findings.
Score Folding Supplies
- Saw frame and half dozen 2/0 blades.
- Straight hand shears of good quality. Curved shears are optional, but allow more flexibility in cutting some of the shapes. Shears should be able to handle 20 gauge sheet of non-ferrous metal.
- Hard silver solder (#70), in sheet or wire, according to your preference.
- Ten 1” diameter cut-off discs. The gray emery type hold up better than the red type.
- Ten ¾” or less diameter cut-off discs of the gray type. The smaller the better for making compound and tight curves. That stash of cut-off discs that you’ve been saving because they’re too worn down for other things is perfect.
- Three screw-in type mandrels for holding the cut-off discs.
- Small pieces of sterling sheet in 20 gauge-24 gauge, with a total area of 1½” or more. No more than 2 gauges are necessary. Scraps are OK, as are scraps that are cut offs from other projects and have interesting shapes. Shears will be available for larger sheets to be cut down. If taking both score and fold forming classes, anticipate your need for additional silver.
- A small ball burnisher or old ball point pen that has run out of ink, to emboss lines on practice foil without punching or cutting through the foil.
- Safety glasses or goggles.
- Optivisor or similar magnifying glasses are optional.
Note: The Naja Suppliers, next door to the Clear Creek Academy, is open on Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Please contact the workshop instructor, Katherine Palochak (kpalchk@trib.com or 307-320-3094), if you have any questions about the materials or need clarification.
